England news: Lauren James makes the difference as Lionesses beat the Netherlands 4-0
England bounced back from a disappointing 2-1 defeat to France with a statement win, thumping the Netherlands 4-0 in their second group stage game at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

Sarina Wiegman’s side looked flat against the French - disjointed in midfield, blunt in attack, and shaky at the back.
Despite flashes of brilliance, including moments of technical class from Lauren James, England lacked the rhythm and bite that has defined their best performances under Wiegman.
James was deployed in a deeper role against France, tucked inside rather than out wide where she thrives.
Her close control and ability to glide past defenders caught the eye, but her influence was ultimately limited.
It was a tactical decision that left the midfield without a true connector and blunted England’s attack.

‘Lauren James is magic’
Against the Netherlands, however, Wiegman made the adjustment that fans and pundits had been calling for: James was pushed higher and wider on the right wing, and the result was devastating.
The Chelsea star was unplayable in Zurich. She opened the scoring with a composed finish in the 22nd minute, finding the far corner, and added her second just before the hour mark, capitalising on a rebound.
Brighton striker Nikita Parris summed it up best speaking about Lauren James: “There’s no ceiling on her talent - we’re looking at a potential global star.”
Complete team display gives England hope
It wasn’t just James who impressed. Alessia Russo had three assists while Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway also got on the scoresheet.
The win not only restored belief but also reignited England’s campaign, giving them hope heading into the final group stage match against Wales.
More importantly, it showed what this side can do when key players are used in their best positions.
With momentum now firmly back on their side, England will look to carry this confidence into the knockout rounds should they advance.
If the Lionesses beat Wales, they will be banking on France to beat the Netherlands. However, if the Netherlands win, goal difference will decide who advances.
