F1 news: Andrea Kimi Antonelli in pole position to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes
Toto Wolff says he wants to ‘reinvent’ Mercedes at the end of the 2024 F1 season - pointing to a scenario where Andrea Kimi Antonelli gets the nod to replace Lewis Hamilton.
Seven-time champion Hamilton shocked the world of Formula One before the start of the 2024 season when he announced he would be ending his stay with Mercedes to join Ferrari for the 2025 season.
That decision triggered a flurry of speculation around who would replace Hamilton in the Mercedes seat alongside Britain’s George Russell.
One name touted as a possible contender was the man making way for Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari, Carlos Sainz - but Wolff dismissed that notion at the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes team principal told the press: “We've embarked on a route now to say, 'You know what, we want to reinvent ourselves a little bit, going forward.' Kimi Antonelli definitely plays a part in that.
"We haven't taken a decision yet for next year, but we didn't want to have Carlos wait as well, because he needs to take the decisions for himself - that's just fair. But he's doing a super job."

Bologna-born Antonelli is only 17 and turns 18 on August 25, 2024 - and he has also been linked with a move to Williams, where Logan Sargeant’s seat will be up for grabs.
Here, Sports News Blitz takes a look at the career so far of Antonelli, who is like the Leonardo DiCaprio of motor racing - handsome, talented and seemingly destined for greatness.
Starting in karting
Antonelli didn't just dip his toes into the racing world; he cannonballed right in. Starting in karting, he zoomed past competitors like they were standing still.
Here are some of his early feats:
2018 WSK Champions Cup: Won the OK Junior category.
2019 FIA Karting European Championship: Grabbed the title in the OK Junior class.
2020 WSK Super Master Series: Dominated the OK class, proving he’s not just a flash in the pan but the whole fireworks display.
Transition to Single-Seaters
After conquering karting, Antonelli decided it was time to give the bigger toys a spin. And, boy, did he spin them.
In 2021, Antonelli made his debut in Formula 4. Think of it as going from Mario Kart to the real deal.
Italian F4 Championship: Joined Prema Powerteam and grabbed several podium finishes, making it look like child’s play.
ADAC Formula 4 Championship: Also dipped his toes here, because why stick to one continent when you can rule two?
2022: Continued Formula 4 Dominance
Antonelli stuck around in Formula 4 for another year, just to remind everyone he wasn’t a one-hit wonder.
Italian F4 Championship: Dominated with multiple wins, showing he’s got more consistency than a well-cooked risotto.
ADAC Formula 4 Championship: Continued to impress, because when you’re on a roll, you don’t stop.
Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team
Spotting his talent, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team snapped him up faster than you can say “Hamilton”.
Now he has got access to resources and mentors that most drivers only dream about.
Formula Regional European Championship
For 2023, Antonelli decided to up the ante and join the Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) with Prema Racing.
Battling more experienced drivers and handling more powerful cars, Antonelli continues to show he’s not just racing - he’s performing a symphony at 200 mph.
Future Prospects
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is widely considered the next big thing in motorsport. His career path suggests he’s on a high-speed trajectory to Formula 1, perhaps sooner than we think.
