Golf betting tips: Canadian Open – Justin Rose resurgence on the cards in Toronto

One of the most storied tournaments in golf debuts a new course this week as the RBC Canadian Open heads to TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley.

TPC Toronto has never hosted a PGA event before and, at first glance, it may look similar to many of the newer courses out there, boasting stretched holes and wide fairways seemingly playing into the hands of the biggest of hitters.

However, there is more to it than that, with numerous well-protected greens calling for a balance between distance off the tee and accuracy.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Sam Condy looks at four jacks-of-all-trades who have every chance of performing well in Toronto.

Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry has a strong record in Canada, with three top-12 finishes in his last five Canadian Open appearances.

Combine that with his strong run of form this year, achieving four top-10s and nine top-25s – including a T2 at the recent Truist Championship – and Lowry looks like a strong choice ahead of golf's return to Canada.

The Irishman ranks second on tour for SG: Tee to Green and third for Proximity to the Hole, and his consistency could be key this week on a course that rewards strategic play and shot variety.

Sam Burns

Sam Burns is another man with a strong record at the Canadian Open, with two top-10 finishes from three starts.

While his overall season stats appear distinctly average, his most recent performance tells a far different story as he placed inside the top 30 across all major Strokes Gained categories at the Memorial Tournament last week.

An upward trend in form thus looks to be materialising for Burns, with four top-20 finishes in his last five tour appearances.

He has also improved dramatically with the flatstick, which appears to have added some consistency to his game. As a result, backing Burns is an enticing prospect this week.

Justin Rose

Keeping on trend, Justin Rose is yet another player who seems to always turn up in Canada, placing eighth and fourth in his last two Canadian Open appearances.

Rose may have struggled since the Masters, withdrawing from the Truist and missing the cut at the PGA, but he showed glimpses of his old self at the Memorial.

The Englishman clearly enjoys this tournament and, with the US Open just around the corner, there is no better time for Rose to recover from his midseason stumble.

Ludvig Åberg

Ludvig Åberg hasn’t always delivered for punters, but this week feels like a good time to get back on board.

TPC Toronto’s North Course demands long, accurate approach play, with six par-4s over 480 yards and a pair of stretched par-3s ready to test every club in the bag.

The wide fairways moreover reward length, so Åberg’s powerful game should thrive there.

With a packed summer ahead, including the US Open and the Open Championship, he’ll want form on his side, and a confidence boost in Canada could prove pivotal for the Swede.

Åberg has a proven track record on Bentgrass and Poa Annua greens, plus the course seems to match his skill set perfectly, so backing him to pick up the win certainly has some draw.
