Golf betting tips: US Open – Bryson DeChambeau to challenge Scottie Scheffler at Oakmont

Golf's toughest test is back as the PGA Tour heads to the incredibly punishing Oakmont Country Club for the 2025 US Open.

The stretching par-70 course isn’t for the faint of heart; devastating five-inch rough swallows skewed tee-shots, while glassy greens make accurate scrambling near impossible.

With many predicting the winner to finish over par this week, only the best will succeed in Pennsylvania and accurate, patient play is pivotal to walking away with the US Open crown.

Here, Sports News Blitz writer Sam Condy breaks down four of his favourite picks ahead of a merciless week of major golf.

Bryson DeChambeau

There is a choice to make at Oakmont: back Scottie Scheffler at Tiger-era odds or try to beat him.

He’s the favourite for a reason; his game is nearly flawless and perfectly suited to the grind of a US Open, especially considering how punishing the rough is looking this week.

However, short prices don’t pay much, so enter Bryson DeChambeau.

Oakmont should suit the LIV star’s strengths: it’s long, it’s punishing, and it’s grindy.

Two US Open titles are not to be sniffed at and, following weekend storms, the course may play soft through the opening rounds, suiting DeChambeau’s power perfectly.

Add in his ease playing on fast Bentgrass putting surfaces and the American looks the perfect candidate to go toe-to-toe with the ever-reliable Scheffler.

Joaquin Niemann

Joaquin Niemann’s major breakthrough finally arrived with a T8 finish at the PGA Championship.

He followed that up with another LIV victory in Virginia, closing with four birdies in five holes, a timely reminder of his winning instinct.

At just 26, he has already proven he can beat elite players like Jon Rahm and DeChambeau.

The one thing missing is a serious Sunday run at a major and, after finally breaking the top-10 hurdle, it feels like it’s only a matter of time.

His length off the tee and sharp approach game – ranking third in SG: Approach at the PGA – give him all the tools he needs to contend.

Sepp Straka

Sepp Straka’s driving may not be long, but it’s efficient; he is one of the most accurate drivers on tour, ranking 37th in SG: Off the Tee this season.

And while Oakmont typically plays long, the rough looks excruciatingly punishing this week.

As a result, sacrificing some distance to find fairways may stand Straka in good stead.

However, his tee shots are only one part of his broader golfing profile that suits Oakmont well.

The Austrian ranks third in SG: Approach, fourth in Tee to Green, and 17th in Putting, so – while he might not overpower a course – his control and consistency are elite.

Oakmont generally plays into the hands of longer hitters, but it looks like a different beast this year, and Straka’s diverse shot selections may allow him to navigate his way around one of golf’s toughest challenges.

Harris English

Harris English is quietly piecing together one of the best seasons of his career, putting himself firmly in the conversation for a Ryder Cup spot come September.

The 35-year-old finished runner-up at the PGA Championship, added a T12 at The Masters, and has five more top-20 finishes this year.

His season highlight came in January, winning at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He checks a lot of the boxes heading into Oakmont, ranking inside the top 45 for Driving Accuracy, top 40 for Bogey Avoidance, and top 30 for Scrambling Outside 30 Yards – all key traits for surviving a US Open test.
