Man Utd news: A new era begins as Ruud van Nistelrooy makes way for Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim officially took over as Manchester United's new manager this week, ushering in a fresh era at Old Trafford and marking the end of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s brief but successful stint as interim head coach.
Sports News Blitz writer Noah Ngcobo takes a look at Van Nistelrooy’s brief spell in caretaker charge of the Red Devils - and looks forward to a new era at the Theatre of Dreams.
Another Dutchman departs
While Van Nistelrooy guided United through a positive four-game spell, winning three matches at Old Trafford - as many as former manager Erik ten Hag had managed all season - United have confirmed that Van Nistelrooy and several other staff members from Ten Hag’s regime will not continue under Amorim’s leadership.
Following Ten Hag's departure, Van Nistelrooy stepped up to stabilise the squad, leading them to two victories over Leicester, including a 3-0 win in his final game at the club, a Europa League win against PAOK, and a draw with Chelsea.
In his final days as interim manager, he spoke about restoring belief and unity within the team.
“It’s about believing in themselves,” Van Nistelrooy shared, adding that his goal was to get the players moving in the right direction.
Despite his success, United swiftly confirmed Van Nistelrooy's departure, reflecting a commitment to a seamless transition with Amorim at the helm.
On his very first day, Amorim made the difficult decision to bring in his own staff, effectively parting ways with Van Nistelrooy and ensuring the new leadership structure was in place from the start.
The approach highlights Amorim's clear intent to lead with a cohesive backroom team, composed of trusted colleagues who accompanied him from Portugal, including Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro, Jorge Vital, and sports scientist Paulo Barreira.

United’s statement expressed gratitude for Van Nistelrooy’s dedication during a challenging period.
“Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. He approached his role with dedication, and we are grateful for his contribution,” it read.
A Red Devils icon
Van Nistelrooy’s performance as interim manager not only steadied the club but earned him further respect as a Red Devils icon.
Amorim will officially kick off his Premier League tenure on November 24 against Ipswich, after the international break.
For Manchester United, Amorim’s choice to lead with his own team from the outset may help foster a sense of unity and fresh purpose under his guidance.
Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy’s brief role as caretaker may be over, but his legacy at Old Trafford remains firmly intact.
